From the very earliest stone tools of the Paleolithic era to the most latest gadgets and digital advances, human inventions and technologies have shaped civilizations and transformed life on earth. The world of invention is never static: Expectations and capabilities evolve with every step forward, and each new generation boasts its own set of innovative thinkers.

While some inventions make life easier for us, others cause revolutions that forever change the course of human history. The telephone is certainly one such invention that changed humankind's way of communicating forever. Despite the telephone's revolutionary importance, it was not immediately embraced.

Many other inventions were created that suffered an even more dismal reception. In fact, the following inventions were never accepted by the public:

The gas-proof stroller (a pre-war concept)
The self-warming police vest
The dash-mounted automobile map of the United States
The self-tipping hat (as seen on the right)
